The charm of gold leaf,
from Kanazawa to the world

40 years have passed since I first became captivated by the brilliance of a single sheet of gold leaf, and decided to found a company to popularize it.
Kanazawa metal leaf craftwork and our oil-absorbing paper, made from the gold leaf paper process, are now nationally recognized, and they have become an important craft that plays a part in the local industry of Kanazawa. When I established the company in 1975 even though 99% of all gold leaf production was in Kanazawa, it wasn't being used as a craft material at all, and even the words "Kanazawa metal leaf" weren't written down anywhere.

Due to the economic downturn after the oil shock, the metal leaf material industry was hit hard. I felt like something had to be done for the metal leaf industry, and I became inspired with a purpose. From my own exposure to it, I began to make craftwork, and began selling it as Kanazawa Metal Leaf Craftwork. The company was named, Hakuichi, from the fact that Kanazawa metal leaf craftwork was first made at a foil shop. This is where it all began.

I want Kanazawa metal leaf to be used as an everyday necessity, not as a luxury item. I want to nationally convey Kanazawa metal leaf as a Kanazawa brand. Hakuichi began from these kinds of ideas. Starting with craftwork, in 1975 we focused on gold leaf paper, a by-product of creating gold leaf, and received a patent for oil-absorbing paper made from the gold leaf paper process. Later, we developed a unique culinary gold leaf and received ISO certification. We also developed a new Kanazawa metal foil that applies special techniques to the metal leaf. We have expanded the possibilities of Kanazawa metal foil by bringing about reform and innovation not bound by common knowledge, and through our building material processing business that brings glamour to dwelling spaces and commercial spaces alike.

Fortunately, the national awareness of Kanazawa metal leaf has risen over the years since our humble beginnings. I couldn't be happier with Kanazawa metal foil playing a role in the local industry. We will continue to spread Kanazawa metal leaf from Kanazawa to the world, and take on new challenges in new fields. Thank you for your continuing support.
